3 Myths About Dining Etiquette and Table Manners
Did you know you may have improper table manners without even realizing it? The internet and social media allows for great opportunities for learning, but there are many tips that spread around that are simply misinformation. The etiquette space is no exception; at The American School of Protocol, we often see etiquette experts who provide information with the utmost confidence, yet cannot back up their claims with sources.
These dining etiquette myths may surprise you, and you may have even put these into practice for years. When we lead our etiquette certification programs, we ensure to correct these mistakes. It’s never to late to change course! Here are 3 dining etiquette myths that need addressing.
1. “Never put your elbows on the table!”
MYTH!
Although you still should not put your elbows on the table while dining, it is perfectly acceptable to put your elbows on the table in between courses when there is no food at your place.
Sometimes, especially in corporate meetings, keeping your elbows on the table with your stance upright can veven signify power and authority. When we teach public speaking skills in our etiquette certification classes, we include this tip as part of posture training.
2. “Put your napkin in your chair when leaving the table.”
MYTH!
You should never put your napkin in your chair, even when leaving the table. It is best to leave it exactly where you found it or on the plate when finished.
A chair can carry all sorts of germs, and when you return to the table, you will need to use your napkin. We do not want germs spread around on your face!
3. “If you drop your silverware, you should pick it up and ask the waiter for a new utensil.”
MYTH!
Although you should ask your waiter for a new utensil, do not pick up the silverware you dropped under the table. Even if it seems courteous, it is poor etiquette to do so. In addition, it can also spread germs!
Instead, kick your dirtied silverware under the table and ask for a replacement. That way, you do not draw excessive attention to the mistake and are ensuring cleanliness.
