Don’t Make These 3 Dining Mistakes

Everyone has bad habits. You may think that people won’t notice small behaviors that seem unimportant. However, there are some manners that really get in the way of your self-presentation.

Dining etiquette is not just for corporate lunches: it’s for day-to-day interactions. And good news — many habits that we fall into are easily preventable. They may seem small, but their impact is large. Here are 3 dining mistakes that you do NOT want to make.

  1. Leaving your napkin in your chair.

    This is one we see all the time, especially when you are leaving the table. Chairs have all kinds of bacteria and general unclealiness, and putting your napkin there may cause all sorts of hygenic issues.

    Instead, you can simply put the napkin back where you found it, typically on the table or plate.

  2. Placing silverware incorrectly.

    People tend to dismiss how they place their silverware after dining out. However, it can be a helpful signal when a waiter is taking your plate, particularly at fine dining establishments.

    Making sure that you are aware of open and closed positions is essential to dining etiquette success.

  3. Passing around the table the wrong way.

    It’s not something we often think about, but which way we pass around the table makes a big difference. If you have a large gathering of people, and one person decides to pass the casserole in one direction and someone else chooses to pass the asparagus the other direction, you will create a collision.

    Always pass to the left side. Seasonings such as salt and pepper should always stay together for the convenience of your guests.
