St. Patrick’s Day Etiquette

Today, you will see many people celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in many ways. Having roots in Irish Catholic celebrations, it has since been secularized in the US as a celebration of Irish culture annually.

We may have our own celebrations, but there are plenty of typical ones too: dressing in green, going out with your friends, and partying are very common. While we celebrate, let us be mindful of our behaviors and keep these tips in the back of our heads.

1.      Do not touch anyone without their consent.

Pinching is a very popular tradition in American St. Patrick’s day celebrations. Wearing green is fun, but we must keep it respectful. Keeping your hands to yourself is always a smart idea.

Instead, we can continue wearing green and respect each other’s boundaries.

2.      Do not use stereotypes or caricatures.

St. Patrick’s Day is all about celebrating Irish culture, whether that be cuisine, drinks, history, and heritage. Although sometimes without harmful intent, stereotypical imagery is often used to evoke the spirit of the festivities.

Let us do our best to avoid stereotyping anybody’s culture and instead celebrate the richness of Irish culture.

3.      Be careful about going overboard.

Everybody likes to have a fun party now and then. Many people are going out with their friends to bars or on the town tonight. To give respect our friends and those around us, practicing moderation and respectful fun is key to ensuring everyone feels included and is having a good time.
