5 Interview Tips That Will Help You Stand Out

Interview processes are becoming more of a hassle. It’s a common experience to go through five interview stages, questionnaires, and tours, and still not land the job. It can seem like everyone is applying for the same jobs. This is why it’s more important now than ever before to make yourself stand-out.

A great resume is all well -and-good, but how you present yourself means the most to a potential employer. Here are 5 small but essential tips to keep in mind next time you interview.

1. Address someone by “Mr.” or “Mrs.” until invited to use their first name.

Using proper honorific titles demonstrates respect right out the gate. Though it may be tempting to use the interviewer’s first name, using these prefixes will show them that you pay attention to the little details. That, right there, is one of the foundational elements of professional etiquette.

2. When you call a potential employer, ask if its a convenient time to talk.

If you have already noticed the trend of common courtesy, then you get the point. Making sure you are talking with the interviewer at the right time will solidify a respectful, professional relationship.

3. No matter how long the interview process takes, don’t get too friendly.

Maintaining your professionalism with a potential employer is a key tenet that one should carry with them throughout their adult-life. Yes, be kind, but making sure these boundaries are in check will ensure a great networking relationship.

4. Thank the potential employer for his/her time.

Once again, this point is to make sure that the interviewer knows you view their time as valuable. You are there to impress them, and valuing time shows great communication, time management, and professionalism.

5. Follow with a thank-you note.

Writing a thank-you-note is vastly undervalued in today’s society, but it can make or break your chances with certain employers. During our etiquette certification classes, we drill the art of the thank-you-note into our students because of this fact.

Some of these tips may seem simple, but its suprising that people often lack these basic etiquette skills. We know how important an interview can be, and we always try to prepare our students to become masters of networking through conversation skills. Once you take these steps, you will be on your way to becoming star interviewee.
